Breast Self Exams (BSE)
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, women should do self breast exams at least once a month. These self exams help you get familiar with how your breasts look and feel, so that you can alert your healthcare professional if you notice any changes.
These exams should be done 2-3 days after your period, and it's recommended to do both in front of a mirror and while laying down.

Mammograms
While it is important to do self exams, mammograms are especially important once you are over the age of 40 as they can detect a tumor before you feel it. The National Breast Cancer Foundation recommends women 40 and older should have mammograms every 1 or 2 years.
